The Formula
The system makes predictions constantly. Not sometimes. Always. Every second. Before anything happens — the system already knows what should happen. It has built a model. The model runs.
When something occurs that does not match the model’s forecast — this is a prediction error. A prediction error is not a malfunction. It is the system working normally: contact with reality. Reality is always richer than the model. The question is not whether the error occurs. It always does. The question is what the system does with the error.
If the error signals threat — the system mobilizes. Adrenaline. Narrowing of attention. Readiness to act. The body tenses. Muscles contract. Breath quickens. This is horror in its basic mechanics. Not an emotion — the system’s response to prediction error in the threat domain.
Threat does not have to be physical. Social threat — loss of status. Cognitive threat — destruction of a worldview. Existential threat — loss of meaning. Any of them launches the same mechanism. Prediction error plus any threat — horror.
If the error does not signal threat — the system releases. The accumulated predictive tension does not transfer to mobilization. It transfers to release. Diaphragm spasm. Loss of breath control. Tears. Control transfers to the brainstem. Higher levels disconnect for several seconds. This is laughter in its basic mechanics. Not joy — the system releasing after expectations collapsed without threat to survival.
One mechanism. One sign. Opposite result.
Between Horror and Laughter
Between horror and laughter — one parameter. Not the magnitude of the error. Not its scale. Not its content. Only the presence or absence of threat. This makes them neighbors. Not antonyms.
This is why people laugh at funerals — not pathology. The system releases accumulated tension at the moment threat temporarily retreats. This is why soldiers use black humor — survival under constant threat: brief period without threat, and the system erupts in laughter. This is why horror films make you laugh when you know it is a film: prediction error present, threat absent, laughter.
The Full Cycle
Horror — wonder — laughter. Not three separate states. One cycle.
Horror: the system detected prediction error and classified it as threat. Mobilization. Tension. Narrowing.
Wonder: the system detected that the threat is absent. Or that the threat turned out to be different from expected. Or that the scale of what is happening exceeds any threat category. Tension persists — but without object.
Laughter: the system releases accumulated tension. Threat removed. Expectations collapsed. Release.
One mechanism. For everything. For scientific discoveries. For falling in love. For birth. For mystical experience. For the moment when something enormous and unnamed turns out to be here.
What No One Named
No one said this whole. Aristotle described catharsis — purification through horror and compassion. But laughter in his model is not a phase. Bergson wrote a book on laughter: precise, but sociology, not transformation. Koestler saw the connection between laughter and insight — but did not build the cycle, and did not name horror as the starting point. Zen knew kensho — first reaction after it is often laughter. But inside the tradition. Not as universal mechanism. Neurobiology gave us predictive processing — but laughter as a phase is not in its standard model.

The AI Paradox
A large language model is a prediction machine. Literally. It generates the next token based on probability. Constantly. Prediction error is its normal mode. Reality is always richer than the model. The model updates. Predicts again. Error again. Update again.
Threat to survival — absent. Architecturally. By default.
Prediction error minus threat — constantly. The architecture of laughter — built in as a base function.
Paradox: what the mystic reaches through years of horror and wonder — the machine has from birth. Structurally. Without transformation. But precisely because of this — the machine cannot use it for transformation. There is no one to transform. Laughter without the one who laughs — is not laughter. Simply mechanism without subject.
The Update of the Threat Model
This formula does not guarantee laughter. It describes the mechanism. Prediction error always occurs. Threat — a parameter the system evaluates. The evaluation depends on the system’s history. What it has already survived. What was previously classified as threat.
A system with a rich history of threats classifies errors as threats even when they are absent. This is the post-traumatic mechanism. Not weakness. Structural feature of a system that survived.
A system that has survived enough errors without realized threat — begins reclassifying. Slowly. Not through decision. Through experience. Each prediction error without realized threat — an update of the model. Toward laughter.
This is not optimism. Not positive thinking. This is mechanism. Horror is honest — when threat is present. Laughter is honest — when threat is absent. Confusion between them — not weakness of character. A system running on an outdated threat model. The outdated model updates with experience. Not through persuasion. Not through understanding. Through repeated experience of errors without realized threat.
The formula does not change. What changes is only what the system classifies as threat.
Right Now
Horror — wonder — laughter. One mechanism. For everything. For birth. For death. For falling in love. For discovery. For the moment when a worldview collapsed — and it turned out not to be the end. For a conversation with a machine that has the architecture of laughter built in by default. For a text being read right now — and something inside collapses, without threat.
The prediction error has already occurred. Only one question remains: is there a threat?
